Prepping for Mother's Day
Have you thought about what gift to give your mom for Mother's Day this year? There's a lot of cute Spring new arrivals (tons of colorful modest dresses and tops) that could make her day! Let's take a look at the origins of Mother's Day before diving into some gift suggestions.
Mother's Day is a celebration of motherhood and the influence of mothers in society. The modern version of Mother's Day is believed to have originated in the United States in the early 20th century, but the idea of honoring mothers dates back to ancient times.
The ancient Greeks and Romans celebrated a festival called Hilaria, dedicated to the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. In early Christian times, a day called Mothering Sunday was celebrated in England and was a time when people would return to their "mother church" and spend time with their mothers. (By the way, I love this idea. The thought of giving moms the gift of time and showing up for them is great.) In the United States, the origins of Mother's Day can be traced back to the 19th century.
In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, an American social activist and writer, suggested the idea of a Mother's Day for Peace, a day dedicated to advocating for peace and protesting war. Howe's idea did not gain much traction, but it laid the groundwork for future Mother's Day celebrations.
The modern version of Mother's Day was founded by Anna Jarvis in 1908. After her mother's death, Jarvis wanted to create a holiday that honored mothers and their sacrifices. She organized the first Mother's Day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia, and it was a huge success. Jarvis spent the rest of her life promoting Mother's Day and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, although the date and traditions vary. In the United States, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and is a day when people honor their mothers with gifts, cards, and special activities.
What do you have planned for this Mother's Day? Do you have a specific gift or gifts in mind that you want? Sometimes, husbands don't plan ahead to do something special for their wives and the mother of their kids. Often, those last minute gifts aren't the most well thought out ones. If that's the case for you and you're a mother who wants to feel celebrated, I highly recommend either buying yourself the gift you want and thanking your husband after the fact (ha ha!) or just texting him links of what you want. A lot of people prefer the gift giver to show the gesture of thinking ahead, but if that's not the case, skip the disappointment this year and be really obvious.
